One of the most frequented tourist destinations in the capital city of Ethiopia, St George Cathedral in Addis Ababa has attracted tourists since its inception in 1896. The cathedral has a long historical background. It was constructed in honor of St. George. For the first and the last time in the Battle of Adwa, any African nation had imposed their victory over the European forces. The relic of St George was carried to the battlefield and it is believed that this helped in marking a victory for the Ethiopians.
There is another historical fact that is associated with St. George Cathedral at Addis Ababa. The church was also the place where Emperor Haile Selassie was coroneted. He was a popular emperor, who was also known by names such as Elect of God, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah and King of Kings. The king was also a follower of Rastafarian School of Devotion and as a result, the cathedral has developed into a pilgrimage destination of Rastafarians.

The St. George Cathedral of Addis Ababa is beautifully architectured from outside as well as from inside. The cathedral has a seating arrangement for about 200 people. There are many interesting things that can be seen inside the church. The most attractive thing is the coronation throne of Emperor Haile Selassie. The cathedral also houses beautiful artworks of well-known Ethiopian artists and painters. The small museum in the cathedral premises has collections of various items that were used at the times of battles. Some of the items include helmets made from lion's heads, garbs adorned during battle times, tridents and swords.
Located at the North End of the Churchill Road, St. George Cathedral, Addis Ababa can be easily accessed from almost all parts of the city. The church is made accessible to common people from 0800hrs-0900hrs and from 1200hrs-1400hrs regularly. All the visitors to the cathedral can attend masses and prayer sessions.
