The present mayor of Addis Ababa is Ato Birhane Deresa. The mayor of the Ethiopian capital is assisted by a cabinet, which helps the mayor to take decisions. Ato Birhane Deresa has played an active role in modernizing the administrative system of Addis Ababa after coming to power in the first half of 2003. The mayor has created many new institutions for street cleaning and housing that help in positive development of the city. One of the major priorities of the mayor is to deliver quality services to all the city dwellers.
Ato Birhane Deresa has also worked upon reducing the waiting-time taken to perform official duties like marriage and birth certificates, tax registration and land registration.
