Travel to Addis Ababa remains incomplete without visiting the attractions in and around the Ethiopian city. Lake Tana is the largest lake of Ethiopia. The Tana Lake is surrounded with 37 islands. The islands are home to many monasteries and churches dating back to the 13th century. The islands, which are worth visiting during Lake Tana Tour, are Birgida Mariam, Dek, Kebran, Debre Maryam, Dega Estefanous, Narga, Mitsele Fasiledes and Tana Cherkos 9. Most of the monasteries are open only to men. The Kebran Gabriel is open only to male tourists from Bahir Dar. Another monastery is the Dega Estephanos, which is reached by steep and winding path. Narga Selassie and Ura Kidane Mehret are the two religious houses located on the banks of Lake Tana. The interesting birdlife along the lake attracts a good number of tourists.
