The ministry of health in Addis Ababa takes care of the general health conditions of the people of this Ethiopian city. The city is prone to meningococcal disease. The travelers to Ethiopia must take vaccinations for Hepatitis A, polio, typhoid, cholera and yellow fever. They should also drink bottled water as waterborne diseases are prevalent in Addis Ababa.
The travelers should carry their own regular medicines. The other health risks in Addis Ababa are bilharzias and rabies. HIV/AIDS is highly prevalent. One should make arrangements for a medical insurance before going to Addis Ababa. If one is traveling to Addis Ababa from an infected area, he/she must carry a yellow fever inoculation certificate.

Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital is a well-known hospital of the city that provides free medical treatment to the women suffering from obstetric fistula. It was founded in 1974 by Dr. Catherine Hamlin and Reginald Hamlin. This is the only hospital in the world that is solely dedicated to the treatment of fistula. Those medical students of Ethiopia, who specialize in obstetrics and gynecology, have to undergo a two months training program at Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital.
Health Sector Development Program (HSDP) was launched by the Government of Ethiopia in 1998. This program aims at the development of the standard of health of Addis Ababa people with a strong emphasis on primary health care.
