Girma Wolde-Giorgis


Girma Wolde-Giorgis is the President of Ethiopia. He was born in December of 1924. On 8th October 2001, he took the chair of Ethiopian President for the first time. Girma Wolde-Giorgis was re-elected on 9th October, 2007.

Early Life of Girma Wolde-Giorgis

Girma Wolde-Giorgis did schooling from an Ethiopian Orthodox Church school. Later he joined Teferi Mekonnen School at Addis Ababa. After the invasion of Italy, he was shifted to an Italian school.

Girma Wolde-Giorgis received Management certificate from Holland. He had also the credit of receiving certificates in Air Traffic Management from Sweden and Air Traffic Control from Canada.

Professional Career of Girma Wolde-Giorgis

In 1941, Girma was enrolled at Ethiopian Military Radio Communication that was set up by United Kingdom. After that he graduated as Sub-Lieutenant from Genet Military School in 1944. In 1946, Girma Wolde-Giorgis joined Air Force. After two years he went on to become teacher in flight control and air navigation. In 1951 he was appointed the Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority.

Next year Girma became a member of the parliament of Ethiopia. Girma Wolde-Giorgis had also served as Manager of the Import and Export Enterprise (IMPEX). Till becoming the Ethiopian president, Girma has worked in various government posts. He has also worked in various non-government organizations in his career.
