There are many ethnic groups in Addis Ababa that have cultures and customs of their own and in turn make the culture of Addis Ababa rich and vibrant. The various ethnic groups, Addis Ababa have come from various parts of the nation and settled in the city. This migration has been taking place since a long time in the city.
The dominant ethnic group in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia are the Amharas. They make up almost 50% of the total population in the city. This ethnic group came to Addis Ababa in the regime of Menelik. is a minority group, called the Gallas, who constitute about 20% of Addis Ababa population. Another ethnic group at Addis Ababa are the Gurage. Making 20% of the Addis Ababa population, this group is mainly agriculture based. They actually came to the city as clients, laborers, slaves and visitors.
Apart from these major Addis Ababa ethnic groups, there are many small groups in the city too. There are some tribes and groups from the former Ethiopian province of Eritrea and Tigray, who form 9% of the population of the capital city of Ethiopia. Foreign nationals, who have made Addis Ababa their permanent home, contribute about 1% to the population of the city.
