Endelkachew Makonnen

Endelkachew Makonnen was a well-known politician of Ethiopia. He was born in 1927 in Addis Ababa. His full name is Lij Endelkachew Makonnen. He is the son of Ras Betwoded Makonnen Endelkachew, who was the Prime Minister of Ethiopia in 1950s. He received his education at the Oxford University.

Endelkachew Makonnen served in the following posts before becoming the Prime Minister of Ethiopia:
  • Ethiopian Ambassador to Britain
  • Permanent Representative to the United Nations
  • Minister for Posts and Communications
  • International President of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA)
Endelkachew Makonnen was a member of the aristocratic Addisge clan.
He was the Prime Minister of Ethiopia from 28th February to 22nd July, 1974. At this period, the Imperial government faced protests from the students and the working community. They wanted reforms in politics and land tenure. Endelkachew put before these demands in front of the Ethiopian monarchy. A new constitution was proposed to be adopted that would replace the constitution adopted in 1955.

On 30th April, Makonnen ordered for the arrest of the former ministers responsible for corruption in the government. On 26th June, a group of conservative members of the Chamber of Deputies requested for the release of some of the ministers arrested for corruption.

Makonnen’s reformatory measures were strongly disliked by the young members of the armed forces. Despite his efforts to retain power, he was arrested on 22nd July, 1974. It was on 23rd November that Endelkachew Makonnen was taken to the Akaki Central Prison, where he was executed on 24th November.
