A trip from Addis Ababa to Debre Damo covers a distance of approximately 1176 kilometers. Debre Damo is located in the northern part of Ethiopia and is known for the 6th century Debre Damo monastery. This place lies in the west of Adigrat in the Mehakelegnaw Zone of the Tigray Region.
Debre Damo monastery can be accessed only by rope. It is located on a 24 meters high cliff. One has to undertake an arduous journey to reach the apex. From the top of the cliff, one can get an exotic view of the Tigray Highland. Today, a large number of monks reside on the hill top.

Debre Damo monastery has a collection of manuscripts. Besides, there are a number of paintings beautifully restored inside the monastery. The ceilings have carved wood panels that are adorned with pictures of snakes, lion, rhinoceros and elephant.
Debre Damo monastery was constructed in the 6th century by Abuna Aregawi in an Axumite architectural style. He was one of the nine saints who taught Christianity in Ethiopia. The females are not allowed inside the Debre Damo monastery. The tranquil atmosphere and beauty of this place draws a large number of tourists throughout the year.
