Bale Mountains National Park occupies an area of 2,400 square kilometers. The park is located 400 kilometers distant to the south of Addis Ababa. The park is home to various species of birds and animals. The park was established in the year 1970. Bale Mountains National Park is one of the major tourist attractions near Addis Ababa, to where excursions from the city can be organized. The place is ideal for hiking and horse trekking. The duration of the tours can vary from one day to several days.
The Bale Mountains National Park is located on a high plateau and is the largest area of Afro- Alpine in the whole African continent. The Bale Mountains area is divided into three regions. They are the northern plains, woods and bush. Scenic diving, mountain walking and horse trekking are some of the activities that may be enjoyed at the national park. November to February is the best time to visit the place. Trekkers have to get permit for entering the national park from Addis Ababa. Permit is also required for fishing at the Bale Mountains National Park.
Wildlife
Mountain Nyala and Semien fox are the two mammals found in the Bale Mountain region.The mountain Nyala

belongs to the spiral- horned antelope family and is a large antelope.
The Semien Fox, similar to the European Red Fox, is commonly found in the Sanetti Plateau. Apart from these, Klipspringer, rats, mice and colobus monkeys are also found in this region. Carnivores like leopards, lion, hyena, golden jackal and civet are also found. The place is also home to interesting birdlife. Rouget's Rail, pigeons, thick-billed raven, wattled ibis, spot-breasted plover, wattled crane, ruddy shelduck, steppe eagle and krestel are some of the bird species found here.
