Cairo Trade and industry has always been the backbone of the economy. During the 1920s there was a sudden boost to the industrial production of Cairo and it expanded in all spheres. The 1952 revolution witnessed a sudden boom in large scale industrial production of Cairo. Since then there has been no looking back.

Textile industries rank first among the various industries of Cairo. Long staple Egyptian cotton were produced, which were exported in large quantities to foreign countries. Till today, Egyptian cotton is famous all over the world for its high quality and texture. The main industrial sectors of Cairo include prefabricated building material industries, food processing industries, chemical industries, leather industries, leather tanning industries, textile industries, metallurgical industries, petroleum and mining industries, information technology and communication, engineering industries, wood working and furniture industries. The sectors producing pharmaceutical cosmetics and appliances and printing materials have shown remarkable profits in the past few years. In the recent years the health care industry has expanded.

The government of Cairo has adopted and implemented various plans and policies for the growth of trade and industry in Cairo. Federation of Industries or FEI was founded in 1922. This federation was formed with the aim to tackle and overcome the barriers in Cairo industrial sector. There are 12 decision support committees and 16 chambers relating to various industries under this Federation.
