Step Pyramid of Saqqara is undoubtedly one of the best historical monuments in Egypt. It is considered to be a milestone in the evolution of stone architecture. It marks the beginning of the polished smooth faced true pyramids which were built during the 4th dynasty of the pharaohs.
The Step Pyramid in Saqqara is a man made marvel carved out of stone. The gigantic complex is surrounded by a wall of fine white Tura limestone. The Step Pyramid is spread over an area of 37 acres, which was a size of a small town. It is 10.5 meters high and 1,645 meters long. The complex is vast with many functional monuments. Dummy buildings, impressive pavilions, large timuli and terraces, intricately carve facades, stairways, platforms, shrines chapels and life size statues, are found inside. The South Tomb inside this complex is a smaller replica of the Step Pyramid in Cairo.

Archaeological excavations have revealed an underground structure. The Step Pyramid underground is a network of criss cross shafts, tunnels, chambers and galleries. The central corridor is 365 meters in length and interconnects 400 rooms. Such a complex structure underground was first found in the Step Pyramid Saqqara Complex of Cairo.
This Step Pyramid of Saqqara was built for Horus Netjerikhet, popularly known as Djoser. He was a major ruler of Egypt’s 3rd dynasty of the Pharaohs. Imhotep, a famous Egyptian architect built the historical monumental building. He used limestone on a large scale as a construction material.
