Cairo Metro is a popular means of transportation in the city. It is a very convenient easy and hassle free means of communication. Cairo is the only city in all the Middle East and African countries and cities that has a metro. For each ride, a traveler has to pay 0.18 USD, irrespective of the distance covered.
The Metro in Cairo has two coaches especially reserved for women. The first two coaches belong to this reserved criteria. Metro has helped to decrease traffic congestion on the streets of Cairo. Presently Line 1 and 2 are operative and used by nearly 60000 passengers every hour. There is a proposal to extend the connectivity by adding four more lines of the metro service in Cairo:
|
- Line 3: From Imbaba to Abbasiya and finally to the Cairo International Airport.
- Line 6: From Maadi to Shubra.
- Line 5: To connect almost all the lines together.
- Line 4: From Al Ahram to Nasr City
The maintenance and care of Metro in Cairo is taken by the National Authority for Tunnels. In 1987, the first Line 1 which is known as the French Built Line started functioning. Line 1 connected the central part of Cairo with Helwan, the industrial base. The Line 1 of Cairo metro extends to 43.5 km consisting of 33 stations. The Line 2 is known as the Japanese Built Line links which started operating in 1996 October.
