The origin of Cairo languages can be traced back to the ancient Egyptian languages. Numerous languages are spoken in Cairo but Egyptian Arabic is the native language and is spoken by the majority. Literary Arabic is the official language of Cairo. French and English are the two major foreign languages of Cairo.

The language spread in Cairo with the advent of the Arabs, way back in the 7th century. Other Arabic languages found in Cairo are the Bedouin Arabic and the Sudanese Arabic. Berber languages are spoken by a handful of Siwi in Cairo. Domari is an Indo-Aryan language and is used by the 'Dom' inhabiting the north of Cairo.
All the Cairo languages have been essentially derived from ancient Egyptian language or Arabic. The ancient Egyptian language no longer exists. The modern day language is Arabic, which came to Egypt with the Islamic invasions.
