Egyptian Museum


Egyptian Museum also known as the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities is located in Cairo. Established by the Egyptian government in the year 1835, this museum showcases almost 120000 objects from pre historic Egypt to the Greco Roman period. The exhibits of the museum is a live narration of the history of Egypt.

Egyptian Museum was built by the Government to exhibit and restore the numerous artifacts collected from various archaeological excavation sites throughout Egypt. The present museum was built in 1900 in a neo classical style by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon.

Interiors of the Egyptian Museum

There are two main floors in the Egyptian museum at Cairo. The ground floor has an extensive collection of coins from the ancient world. Numerous valuable artifacts from the New Kingdom era is also exhibited here. Coins made of silver, gold and bronze can be seen here. These ancient coins have several languages inscribed in them like the Greek, Latin, Arabic and the ancient Egyptian. Greek, Roman and Islamic coin are also found here. Artifacts belonging to the New Kingdom are slightly bigger in size. The different items include statues, tables and coffins. The first floor of the museum showcases antiquities from the final two dynasties of ancient Egypt. The tombs of
Pharoahs Tuhtmosis II, Tuhtmosis III, Tuhtmosis IV and Amenophis II are placed here.

Collection of the Museum

Ancient Egyptian jewelers are the most fascinating treasures of this famous museum. Gold and semi precious stones were used in the making of these unique pieces. Each piece of jewelry is a glaring example of the high level of Egyptian craftsmanship and proficiency. This museum is a valuable storehouse of Egyptian sculpture. Ancient Egyptian statues were exclusively meant for religious functions. Exceptional pieces of sculpture are vividly exhibited in the museum. The funerary collection of the museum contains artifacts which were placed in the tombs.

The tomb of Tutankhamun the boy-king of Egypt is a unique masterpiece. A large number of artifacts used throughout the King’s life are found in the tomb. It also has many weapons and instruments used by the king. The most known artifact, is the infamous gold mask, weighing 24 pounds of solid gold, which represented the King’s face. This is a masterpiece of the Egyptian museum and has interested thousands of archaeologists and historians throughout the world.
