Medieval Zagreb

The Medieval Zagreb comprised two important settlements of Kaptol and Gradec. The two places together came to be known as the city of Zagreb in the year of 1094. It is said that modern Zagreb has grown out of the medieval settlements. These colonies were developed on the nearby hills. Kaptol was the religious settlement, whereas, Gradec was the civil settlement of Medieval Zagreb.

The religious settlement was constructed around the places of worship. The civil settlement on the other hand, was built upon a hill that was highly secured. There was intense animosity between the two towns of Kaptol and Gradec due to the difference in opinions. The enmity between the towns grew after King Bela IV
had awarded Gradec with a special position. Gradec offered accommodation to the soldiers of Zagreb in the medieval times.

In the year of 1242, the Tartars had captured Kaptol and Gradec towns. Later, in the 15th century, the military base of Kaptol was strengthened to protect the inhabitants from the Turkish attack. In the 16th century, the two towns were joined to form the modern day Zagreb.

The medieval Zagreb was affected from the outbreak of plague and the devastating fire that led to huge loss of life and property. In the year of 1776, the Royal Court of Croatia was again brought back to Zagreb. Presently, Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia.
