Jarun Lake


Jarun Lake runs through the southwestern region of Zagreb. The surrounding lake area is indeed one of the most popular travel destinations in Zagreb. Jarun Lake offers a wide range of recreational facilities to all the tourists who come here from across the globe. The southern part of the Jarun Lake is encircled by the Save river, whereas, the Jarun, Vrbani, Staglisce and Precko districts surround the other sides of the lake.

Lake Jarun was originally part of River Sava. However in 1964, the lake became detached from the river because of a flood. Spread over a total of 240 hectares of land, the area of Jarun Lake was used for the University Games in 1987.

The huge complex of Jarun Lake comprises a small and a large lake and six islands. The lake can accommodate 20,000 swimmers at a single
point of time. Jarun Lake is 5 meters deep. The annual temperature of the lake is 14.3ºC. During the summers, the Jarun Lake records an average temperature of 24.1 ºC.

Several sporting events are regularly organized in Jarun Lake. Canoeing, diving, sailing, rowing, golf, football, beach volleyball rollerblading, basketball, mountain-biking and bowling are some of the notable adventurous sporting activities of Jarun Lake. Kayak competitions are almost regularly arranged over here. Jarun Lake is best known for angling. The lake is the natural habitat of the 20 species of aquatic creatures.

Jarun Lake draws several tourists who are enthralled by the exotic landscape of the place. The area supports 129 bird species which are another major attraction of Jarun Lake.
