Zagreb History


The history of Zagreb highlights the past events of the Croatian city. Zagreb History dates back to 1094, during the foundation of diocese by King Ladislaus. In the medieval era, there were mainly 2 settlements on the site of present Zagreb. The religious settlement was known as Kaptol In 1093, Kaptol became the Roman Catholic bishop's seat. On the other hand, the civil settlement was known as Gradec, the meaning of which is fortress.

Presently, Gradec is the Upper Town of Zagreb in Croatia. It is considered to be one of the well-maintained urban regions in Croatia. In the year
1242, both settlements were attacked by Tatar. In the 16th century, Kaptol and Gradec were joined to form the present day Zagreb. During the 17th and 18th century, Zagreb was almost completely ravaged by plague and fire and in the later years, the royal council was moved to Zagreb from Varazdin.

During the 19th century, Zagreb was the National Revival center of Croatia. Since then, a series of historic and cultural institutions were built up in this Croatian city.
