Croatian National Theater was formed in the capital city of Zagreb in 1860. The National Theater was declared a National Institution in 1861 by virtue of a parliament legislation. As the town grew in size the need for a bigger theater became a necessity.
A new structure designed by architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer of Vienna was finished in 1895 and ceremoniously opened by the emperor Franz Joseph I on 14th October of the same year. Emperor Franz Joseph I symbolically beat on the main entrance of the newly constructed Croatian National Theater building with a sliver hammer crafted by the famous sculptor Robert Franges Mihanovic.
The Croatian National Theater repertoire includes operas, ballets, and dramas. All of these forms are extremely popular and tickets are almost always sold out.
