ZAGREB

Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia. Although there exist interesting tales about the origin and meaning of the word Zagreb, the name is derived from Croatian, which means ditch/depression. It is the largest city in Croatia and the only one metropolitan area, which occupies over one million people. The city is the seat of central state administrative bodies and almost all government ministries. Majority of Zagreb's economy come from its various industries. It also has notable service sectors like finance, tourism and trade. The city has the status of a county within Croatia. The Mayor who is elected by the City Assembly leads the city government. Zagreb is the home for the University of Zagreb. It is officially twinned with many town and cities in Germany, Russia, Norway, Japan, Poland, Portugal, USA, China, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Montenegro.
