Tunja of Colombia was established on the 6th day of the month of August in the year of 1539. The person who is behind the establishment of this city of Colombia was a captain with Spanish origin. His name was Gonzalo Suarez Rendon. At the time when this city of Colombia was established, this place used to be a part of the region under the control of El Zaque, who was one of the leaders belonging to the tribe called Muiscas.

Tunja is often referred to as a university city because of the massive literacy of the place. Out of every five citizens of the Tunja city, one regularly attends some kind of educational institute. The city is also well known for the much celebrated Cold Festival.
