Riohacha

Riohacha is one of the major cities of Colombia in the continent of South America. The city of Riohacha is also called Rio Hacha. The Riohacha city forms one of the municipalities into which the country of Colombia is classified.

Riohacha is situated in the northern Caribbean part of the country. The mouth of the river known as Riohacha is located very close to the city of Riohacha. The city shares its name with this river of Colombia.

One of the reasons for the popularity of the region of Riohacha is the historical importance attached to the place. During the time when Colombia was under the colonial rule, this place used to be one of the most significant ports of South America. This is owing to the fact that a big treasury of pearls was discovered at Riohacha.

Riohacha represents the capital city of a department of Colombia, which is called La Guajira. This city has been established by Nikolaus Federmann, a person who is well known for his conquering spree. The city came into being in the year 1535. Riohacha of Colombia has got its name from the name of a legendary figure who originally belonged to this part of South America.

This popular figure is well known as the 'Ax legend'. This city of Colombia is not at all fertile and is desert-like. The people who mainly dwell in this part of Colombia are called the Amerindians. The people belonging to the tribal group called Wayuu form the majority of the population of Riohacha city.
