Arauca is one of the important cities located in Colombia. It is the capital of the department of Arauca in the country of Colombia. The complete name of the Arauca city of Colombia is Villa de Santa Barbara de Arauca.

The region called Arauca was discovered by Jorge de la Espira, a person who was German by birth. The place was discovered as early as the year 1536. Arauca in Colombia was established in the year 1780 by a person called Juan Isidro Daboin. The place got its name from a river flowing through the region called the River Arauca. This river currently borders the region and demarcates Arauca from Venezuela.

Other major information about the Arauca city is that it has been the capital of the police district from the year 1911. During the time period of 36 years between the year 1955 and the year 1991, the city of Arauca has been the capital of the province called Arauca. From the year 1986, it has been the capital of Colombia in the sector of oil industry. The city has been declared the capital city of the department of Arauca from the year 1991.

The exact location of the Villa de Santa Barbara de Arauca is 70° 45' 42 W longitude and the 07°05' 26 N latitude. This capital of the department of Arauca also represents a municipality.

The city of Arauca at Colombia used to be the capital city of the province called New Granada belonging to Casanare. The region does not show any undulation and is therefore, flooded by the River Arauca very often.
