Shanghai is the largest city in China. It is also the largest commercial city in the Far East. The city is also known as "Paris of the East", "Queen of the Orient", "Pearl of the Orient", and "The Whore of Asia". Shanghai was part of Songjiang County prior to its formation.
The city was formed with the construction of a city wall in AD 1553. It is a municipality of the People's Republic of China. The city became the political hub of China and is one of the most important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communication centers of China. The city is often regarded as the center of finance and trade in the mainland China.
Area & Location: Situated on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta in East China, Shanghai is situated at 31°13' Latitude North and 121°28' Longitude East. The city covers a total area of 6,340.5 sq. km. It also has a population of 17,420,000.
