The Tung Wah Hospital is one of the largest community hospitals in the West Cluster of Hong Kong and is one among the public Hong Kong hospitals. The hospital was founded in the year 1870. The Tung Wah Hospital is managed by the Hospital Authority. The hospital mainly serves the communities of the Western and Central District.
Tung Wah Hospital is well known for its Department of Surgery and Department of Medicine. The Department of Surgery specializes in the following areas like ear, nose and throat, breast, plastic surgery, vascular surgery and neurosurgery. The hospital's Day Rehabilitation Centre was founded in the year 1995 in order to strengthen its rehabilitation service to the discharged in-patients through its various services. The rehabilitation center also conducts educational programs to educate the patients and community.
There are 633 beds among which 93 are for day patients, 494 for in- patients and 46 rehabilitation day places. There are 10 beds for the hospital's Day Surgery Centre. Tung Wah was the first hospital in Hong Kong to establish the new improved Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Centre in the year 1993. The center was further expanded in 1998 to give extensive rehabilitation cardiac programs to the patients. In 2001 the hospital also set up its Geriatric Urology Centre and Breast Centre.
According to the Memorandum signed between Tung Wah Hospital and Hospital Authority, the Tung Wah is the first public Hong Kong hospital to cater medicines to the community. The hospital also works with non governmental organizations, local communities, and government departments and also recruits volunteers in order to provide patient services and promote concern among the communities.
