Shing Mun River


The Shing Mun River flows through Sha Tin in Hong Kong. It has got a channel known as the Shing Mun River Channel which has a breadth of 200 meters. This river flows from the area known as Tai Wai. It then traverses through the town of Sha Tin to the Tolo Harbor. The river is situated in the north-eastern part of Hong Kong city.

The bank of the river of Shing Mun is dotted with numerous buildings - both residential and corporate. The three tributaries of the river are:
  • Siu Lek Yuen Nullah
  • Tai Wai Nullah
  • Fo Tan Nullah
The Shing Mun River is also utilized for various sports such as rowing, angling, kayaking, canoeing and dragon boat racing. Boat races are suitably conducted in this river since it has a length of approximately 2000 meters. There are even two boathouses on the river for recreational purpose, one at Shek Mun and the other at Yuen Wo Road.

However, the Shing Mun River of Hong Kong has got heavy metal pollution with presence of aluminum, lead, copper, cadmium and zinc in the water. Steps have been taken to get rid of the problem. As a result, the life forms that were getting affected have reappeared.
