Shanghai Tang

Shanghai Tang is one of the most famous international clothing companies and is located in the city of Hong Kong. The Shanghai Tang was established in the year 1994 and the founder of the company was David Tang Wang Cheung. Shanghai Tang, the first Chinese brand, was launched in Hong Kong in a flagship store at the city of New York. The Shanghai Tang, Hong Kong, however, had to overcome lot of hurdles before getting recognized as an international brand. Although the fashion brand opened its store on the Madison Avenue, in the year 1997, due to very low sales, the store was shut down within two years.

Shanghai Tang moved on to open a new store at a smaller locality and it took four years to re-establish itself as a fashion brand. The arrival of Raphael le Masne de Chermont as the CEO and Joanne Ooi as the creative director paved the way for the recognition of the Shanghai Tang in Hong Kong as an international fashion brand. Today, the Shanghai Tang is one of the most successful brand names in the entire world. One of the chief reasons behind this success is the sales figure of the company in the Asian market. Almost 80% of the total sales of the Shanghai Tang brand are due to the Asian market.

The collections of Shanghai Tang represent the fusion of the brave-new-world colors and decors with the fashion of the old-China. Some of the characteristic features of the garments by Shanghai Tang consist of the women jackets and dresses (qi pao's) that are designed in the traditional colors like, tart lime, confectionary blue and neon pink. The Mandarin suits for men and the children’s wear are tagged with the names of “Velvet Tang,” “Double Fish Tang,” “Happiness Tang” and “Eight Ferries Silk”.

Most of the garments of the Shang-Tang brand are handled by the Imperial Tailors. Shang-Tang also manufactures many house-ware items like, silk photo albums, silver photo frames as well as silver-plated dim sum baskets. Trinkets such as ma hwa teddy bears and postcards are also available with the Shang-Tang brand. Other items include cufflinks and watches with the image of Mao.

The Shanghai Tang boutique has a large collection of women, children and men clothing as well as various kinds of accessories. The women collection at Shanghai Tang includes coats, blouses, jackets, pants, tops, sweaters and sleepwear. The men's collection ranges from shirts and tee shirts, jackets, sleepwear, pants, coats and sweaters. The child wear includes everything from jackets and sleepwear to shirts and tops. The stores also have a huge variety of toys and other such items. The Shanghai Tang collection offers a wide range of gift items and accessories like, candles and fragrances, tableware, tray, travel CDs, frames and albums, stationery items.

The latest collection of the Shanghai Tang is the Khotan: The Silk Road Collection and is basically a
selected variation of the ready-to-wear garments. The “Silk Road” is a reference to the trade route between Chang An (the Xi'An of today) and Rome. The different sources of inspiration for the Silk Road collection of Shanghai Tang include the tribal essence of Central Asia, especially those of Kazakh, Kirghiz, Tajik, Mongol and Uzbek. Other motifs are related to the Han Chinese elements, like, the peony flowers and the “Shou” symbol.
