Hong Kong Police


Hong Kong police force is under the control of the Commissioner of Police named Mr Tang King-Shing. The force was formed in 1844 when Captain William Caine was selected as the first chief of police. The Commissioner of Police is supported by two deputy commissioners in his execution of work. There are 5 departments looking after the day to day operations.

Hong Kong police force was formed in the year of 1844. Hong Kong Special Administrative Region falls under their control and jurisdiction. Captain William Caine was the first Chief of Police. Queen Elizabeth II gave the name of Royal Hong Kong Police Force in 1969.

Hong Kong police force carries out various civic responsibilities based on the British common law and local legislative rules. Earlier, their work also included matters related to customs, immigration and fire-fighting. Mr Tang King-Shing is the Commissioner of Police, Hong Kong. He has to report to the Secretary for Security. Two deputy commissioners help the Commissioner of Police to carry out his responsibilities. They are called 'Deputy Commissioner-Management' and 'Deputy Commissioner-Operations'.

There are 5 departments under the Force Headquarters (Management). These are:
  • Operations and Support: It coordinates the operations of the police force.
  • Personnel and Training: It looks after the management of staff relationship, welfare, recruitment and promotion of the staff.
  • Crime and Security: It is entrusted with the responsibility of investigating crimes and preventing the same.
  • Finance, Administration and Planning: It looks after the financial matters of the force. The administration wing controls the Police Museum and holds the responsibility of the civilians. The Planning and Development Branch formulates plans for modernization and betterment of the police force.
  • Management Services: It has got three branches namely Communications Branch, Information Technology Branch and Business Service Bureau. These perform various functions related to keeping records of crimes, establishing a well developed communication in the city and so on.
The police of Hong Kong has got jurisdiction over 6 regions for its day to day operations. These are:

  • New Territories South
  • New Territories North

The Traffic Headquarters looks after the control and management of traffic in the city of Hong Kong. It also provides education on road safety measures. There is also the Marine Police force in Hong Kong which controls the regional waters and the sea boundaries of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). It prevents illegal immigration through waterways.
