Hong Kong Electric is the main power-providing company in Hong Kong. The company was established in 1889 and since then has been providing uninterrupted electric supply to the region. Though Hong Kong Electric was established in 1889, the main production of electricity commenced in the year 1890. Wan Chai was the first power station established by the company, which was closely followed by the North Point Power Station. The latter started its operations in 1919. There was another power station called The Ap Lei Chau Power Station that was withdrawn in the year 1989. The specialty of this power station was that it was operated by oil. At present, the Lamma Power Station is the place, from where the entire process of power generation happens. The process of power generation in this station commenced from 1990.
The Lamma Power Station, which is the main source of power generation in Hong Kong, is located on a large area. The station has the capacity of producing 3420 MW of power. Operated on a combined cycle unit, eight coal-fired units and five gas-turbine units, the power plant has been able to meet the power demands in the region.

The entire structure was developed and designed in three phases. The power plant mainly utilizes thermal energy for power production. The Lamma Power Station is also slated for extension and further development. A wind power station has also been developed in the region, known as Lamma Wind Power Station. Using wind, a renewable source of energy, power is generated in the station. This has been a welcome project in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Electric has distributed its functions very well among the various divisions of the company. The electricity that is produced at the power station has to be transmitted and distributed to the various parts of Hong Kong and to the Lamma Island. There are transformers installed at various places with high capacities, so that transmission of electricity becomes easy and smooth in the entire region. The underground cables have made the distribution procedure of electricity more streamlined. Cable tunnels have been built to improve the power distribution facility in Hong Kong.
