Geography of Hong Kong




The Hong Kong geography features that it shares boundary with South China Sea and China. It is located in East Asia and falls on the geographical coordinates of 22 15 North and 114 10 East.
The total area covered by Hong Kong is 1,092 sq km out of which the land area is 1,042 sq km and the water bodies cover 50 sq km.

The geography of Hong Kong shows that it has a long coastline of 733 kilometers. There are more than 200 islands in the place. Sometimes, it has to undergo the threats of typhoons. Though Hong Kong is located on volcanic plains, yet no major earthquakes have so far been recorded. The lowest point of Hong Kong is the South China Sea and the highest point is the Tai Mo Shan. The northern side has got lowlands.

The Hong Kong geography also features that it lies south of the Tropic of Cancer. Hong Kong enjoys a cool and humid climate in winter, hot and rainy weather from spring to summer months and a sub-tropical monsoon season.



As per the report of 2001, the total cultivable land in Hong Kong accounts for 5.05%. The topography of Hong Kong shows various hills and mountains with their locations and heights.

According to the Hong Kong ecology, the place is rich in mangroves especially along the Deep Bay. A good variety of birds and butterflies can also be located here.
