Hong Kong Banks


Hong Kong Banks have a three tier system of banking. There are three variations of banks in the city of Hong Kong. The three tier Hong Kong Banks include licensed banks, restricted licensed banks, deposit-taking institutions and deposit-taking companies. All these companies are collectively known as Hong Kong Monetary Authority. The licensed Hong Kong Banks are those which operate the savings and the current accounts and are engaged in the deposit and maturity of the public cheques. The restricted licensed banks of Hong Kong participate in the merchant banking and the activities related to the capital market. These banks also take care of the maturity of the amounts that are more than HK$500,000. The deposit taking companies are owned by the Hong Kong Banks. These companies take care of the activities related to customer finance and the securities business. The restricted licensed banks are specialized in dealing with the deposits related to any amount that is more than HK$ 100,000 and has a term maturity of minimum three months.

Hong Kong Association of Banks

The Hong Kong Association of Banks has replaced the Exchange Banks' Association, in the year 1981. Some of the major roles played by the Hong Kong Association of Banks are:

Promotion of the interests of the banks that are fully licensed in the city of Hong Kong and to make rules regarding the conduction of the business of banking, after consulting the Financial Secretary.

Formation of a board that will take care of the banking issues and the general business problems, for the Government and for various relevant bodies.

Top act as a focal point for the purpose of consultation on the new legislation, the regulatory matters and law reform.

To act as a communication channel among the members of the association and with the third parties as well.

Organizing and sponsoring conferences on the annual dinners and the topical issues, with the eminent personalities.

Promoting the best practices to the members of the association as well as to provide information services, like the issue of the circulars in case of the lost items related to the payment instruments.
