Hong Kong Architecture


Hong Kong Architecture features a blend of eastern and western styles. There is a large scale influence of the Chinese and the British in the architecture of Hong Kong. High-rise buildings dominate in and around Central District and Kowloon area. A large number of old buildings have been broken down for replacement with profit driven buildings.

A heavy influence of Feng Shui can be located in the Hong Kong architecture. Feng Shui is a kind of Chinese guidelines for establishing a harmony with natural forces of the earth. A large number of modern buildings are built in Hong Kong as per the rules of Feng Shui.

If one wants to see some ancient form of architecture in Hong Kong, then a visit to the Repulse Bay Hotel or the Peninsular Hotel will be worthy.These antique buildings will help one in exploring the architectural
expertise of the architects of olden days. Sky-scrappers dot the skyline along the Victoria Harbor. Some of the tallest buildings of Hong Kong are The Arch, Highcliff and The Harbourside.

Some unique architectural work of Hong Kong can be seen in its three bridges. Tsing Ma, 6th largest suspension bridge of the world provides link between Tsing Yi and Ma Wan islands. Kap Shui Mun connects Ma Wan with Lantau. Ting Kau links Tsing Yi and the mainland New Territories.

The Central Police Station, Legislative Council Building and Murray House are the living examples of European architecture in Hong Kong. The British brought in Victorian and Edwardian architectural styles in Hong Kong. Chinese architectural style is still visible in some of the buildings of Hong Kong that have been able to survive the ravages of time. These buildings used to have 3 to 4 stories with shops below, and balconies upstairs.
