Education in Santiago


The Government of Chile looks after the education in Santiago and is also responsible for the educational system of the other parts of the country. The schools form the basic structure of Santiago education and are spread across the city. There are different types of schools offering education at different levels. These include basic education and pre-higher education.

Apart from the schools, the colleges are also an integral part of the education in Santiago. They provide higher education in Santiago. There are also a few international schools and colleges in Santiago. All these educational institutions of the city are affiliated to the universities of Santiago, Chile. The two major universities located in Santiago are:
  • University of Chile
  • University of Santiago
The first 8 years of basic education in the country is compulsory for all the students. It is provided free of cost by the government. The educational year in Santiago begins in March and ends prior to Christmas.

School Education in Santiago

There are both Spanish and bi-lingual schools in Santiago. While the Spanish schools are extremely
popular among the Chilean residents, the international community in Santiago is leaning more towards the bi-lingual schools. A number of Chile nationals are also getting increasingly interested in these bi-lingual schools. However, the best bi-lingual schools impart education at the elementary and the primary levels. Higher education, on the other hand, is largely imparted in Spanish. The government lends special support and grants to these Spanish medium schools.

Santiago Colleges and Universities

Santiago Colleges and universities look after the higher education sector of the city. Santiago College, a Methodist institution from the 19th century, is one of the most prestigious educational institutes of the country. Santiago boasts of as many as four universities. These attract large number of students from all over Chile and from some of the neighboring countries as well. Although most of these institutes were guided by sectarian and missionary ideals at the time of establishment, yet liberal ideas of education have been incorporated in later stages.
