Portage Bridge



The Portage Bridge is one of the major attractions of the city. The bridge crosses the River Ottawa and links the regions of Gatineau, Ottawa and Gatineau. The Portage Bridge connects
the Alexandre-Tache Boulevard and the Laurier Street situated in the Hull sector. It also joins these two streets with the Wellington Street of Ottawa. Constructed by the National Capital Commission, it was named after the Portage Trail located near the Chaudiere Falls, which is the present location of the bridge.

The southern end of the Portage Bridge lies at the south western part of the Wellington Street.

There is a beautiful park along side the River Ottawa. The bridge lies very near to the Parliament Hills. The portage Bridge was first thrown open to the public on 14th August, 1852. Thousands of people had gathered on the opening ceremony of the bridge.

Heavy vehicles are not allowed to ply over the bridge. It comprises of six structures which includes pedestrian road tunnels, parking garage, main bridge, Bridge on the Bronson Canal, pedestrian road near Mili and railway underpass. It consists of beautiful lanes, bikeway and belvederes. The Portage Bridge has uneven pavements and detours at its construction site.
