The Peace Tower is one of the popular tourist attractions of Ottawa. The Peace Tower is a located in the premises of the Canadian Parliament Building and forms a part of the whole structure.
The 300 feet tall Ottawa Peace Tower was originally built to honor the soldiers who fought in the First World War and to mark the end of the war. The Tower stands for the sacrifice of all the 66,650 Canadian soldiers who had laid down their lives in the war. After the demolition of the Victoria Tower in the Parliament Hill fire of 1916, the Peace Tower was built to replace it. The Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII, laid the foundation stone of the Peace Tower in 1919.
One of the special features of the Peace Tower is the bells that adorn the top of the tower. The largest of the towers weighs almost 10,000 Kilograms. In the Memorial Chamber, situated within the Tower, one can have a look at the Books of Remembrance that keeps all the names of the Canadian soldiers who had died in the War. Tourists can also have a panoramic view of the city of Ottawa from the Observatory that is located at the Peace Tower. The top of the Tower also has a clock which can be seen from miles away.
The Peace Tower of Ottawa is significant as a tourist attraction and also as a war memorial.
