Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is governed by a municipal corporation. The municipal corporation of Ottawa is headed by the mayor. The Mayor of Ottawa holds the most important office in the government body of the city. He acts as the Official Head of the city of Ottawa and the Chief Executive Officer of the municipal corporation of Ottawa.

The Ottawa Mayor is assisted in his daily affairs by the deputy mayor and the officials of the City Council of Ottawa. The mayor of Ottawa executes and performs numerous functions. As the official head of the city, the mayor of Ottawa acts as the city’s representative at important national level meetings involving other government officials of Canada. The mayor is the voice of the city and puts forward the views of the citizens to the media during interviews. The mayor actively interacts with the citizens, listening to their complaints and issues. The mayor of Ottawa also holds regular meetings with the city council members in order to plan out strategies
for the better governance of the city.

As the Chief Executive Officer of Ottawa, the mayor is responsible for the overall economic development of the city. He is in charge of allocating budget to individual departments. Only the mayor of the city is authorized to declare a state of emergency in times of crisis. He is the presiding officer at the municipal council meetings. The rates of tax are also decided by the mayor of Ottawa. The mayor also holds the rights to hire government officials for the corporation of Ottawa.

The present mayor of Ottawa is Larry O’Brien. He won by a landslide vote in 2006 to become the mayor of Ottawa. His main focus after becoming the mayor was to strengthen the financial conditions of the city. Tax reform programs and new fiscal policies were implemented by Larry O’Brien that has improved the economy of Ottawa. Prior to becoming the mayor of Ottawa, Larry O’Brien headed CALIAN, a consulting firm of international repute.
