Ottawa City Hall



Ottawa City Hall, located on Laurier Avenue, has a number of predecessors. The first Ottawa City Hall was built in 1849 and it was situated in Queen and Albert Street. The second City Hall was
destroyed in a fire in 1931. The Transportation Building was next made the city hall of Ottawa. The Old City Hall was the city hall of Ottawa until 2000.

The present Ottawa City Hall comprises of two complexes. One wing is located on Laurier Avenue and the other is on Elgin Street. The two wings are inter-connected. The wing on Laurier Avenue serves as the main entrance. The main building of the Ottawa City Hall was built in 1990 and initially it served as the head office of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa. The City Hall has a number of public offices and atriums. There is also an auditorium called Andrew Hayden Hall that serves as the concert hall. A number of festivals, social events, concerts and community celebrations are held in the auditorium of Ottawa City Hall.

The premises of Ottawa City Hall are beautifully decorated with well-kept gardens and fountains. Tourists come to visit this Hall. Even the local people enjoy coming to the City Hall for a leisurely stroll.

The Ottawa City Hall has a section called the Heritage Building. It is connected to the main wing on the Laurier Avenue. The Heritage Building has the offices of the Mayor of Ottawa and also the offices of the other members of Council.
