Chaudiere Bridge Ottawa



The Chaudiere Bridge is a well known a bridge of Ottawa connecting the regions Quebec, Ottawa and Gatineau. The bridge also connects the Booth Street of Ottawa with Rue Eddy
of the Hull region. Formerly known as the "Union Bridge", the Chaudiere Bridge is considered to be the oldest bridge of Ottawa. Built by Colonel By in 1828, the bridge collapsed in the year 1836. Again in 1844, a new bridge was constructed offering ferry services. The new Chaudiere Bridge has been built by the Dominion Bridge Company.

The Chaudiere Bridge in Ottawa comprises of multiple lanes. Crossing the Ottawa River about 0.6 miles, it also passes through the Victoria and Chaudiere Island.

The bridge was named after the Chaudiere Falls which lies very near to the E.B. Eddy complex.The construction of the bridge was approved by the Earl of Dalhousie who was also the Governor-in-Chief of Canada.

The Chaudiere Bridge in Ottawa was planned by Samuel Keefer. It was elegantly designed and was very much advanced in technology. The new bridge was opened to the public in 1844. Traffic congestion increased gradually and the bridge suffered huge damage by the Great Fire, which took place in 1900. In 1919, the Chaudiere Bridge was repaired and now lies in a dilapidated state.
