Cartier Square Drill Hall



The Cartier Square Drill Hall is the home of the Cameroon Highlanders of Ottawa and the troops of the Governor General of Canada. Designed by the great architect of Canada,
Thomas Seaton Scott, the building was built in October 1879. Decorated with a tall mansard tower, the Cartier Square Drill Hall has been built on a stone base. The building is covered with red bricks and has several gas lines feeding the iron stoves underneath. The drill hall was in a very bad condition in 1910. After some minor repairs the hall was reopened in 1996.

The Cartier Square Drill Hall of Ottawa features an Officer's Mess. and a Heritage Room. The former structure was built for the personnel of the Foot Guards of the Governor General and the Cameroon Highlanders of the city. The Officer's Mess of the Cartier Square Drill Hall features a wide collection of regimental silver.

The Heritage Room of the Cartier Square Drill Hall houses several artifacts, paintings and photographs of both the troops of Canada. Initially, it was designed for the officers of the Cameroon Highlanders of Ottawa but later on the two messes combined to form the one " Officer's Mess".
