Bank Street Bridge



Founded in 1866, the Bank Street Bridge is a steel bridge that had been built to facilitate transportation in Ottawa. It connects the southern part of old Ottawa to the Glebe.
It crosses the Rideau Canal and also passes over the Colonel By Drive and the Queen Elizabeth Driveway.

Initially there was a wooden bridge which had been constructed in the year 1866 at the same location. After few years of the construction of this wooden bridge, a steel swing bridge was built for allowing boats to pass through. The present structure of the Bank Street Bridge was constructed in 1912.

In the year 1981, plying of heavy vehicles was completely banned over the bridge. The Bank Street Bridge was restored in the year 1993. The bridge is officially called as the Bank Street Canal Bridge in Ottawa.

The Bank Street Bridge is very popular among the tourists as it has a number of good coffee shops, shopping areas on its sides. The neighboring locality of Glebe is also a major attraction site for tourists. The Bank Street Bridge of Ottawa is a beautiful bridge which has become a popular tourist site. The bridge is not very safe for cyclists and pedestrians due to the heavy traffic of vehicles plying over it.
