Alexandra Interprovincial Bridge

The Alexandra Interprovincial Bridge connects the communities of Quebec, Gatineau and Ottawa. It is a cantilever bridge, locally known as the Alexandra Bridge and Interprovincial Bridge.
Built by the Canadian Pacific Railway between 1898 and 1900, the bridge primarily served the CPR trains. It also carried electric trolleys between Hull and Ottawa. The Ottawa Union Station closed down in 1966 and this was the last time that this bridge was used by the passenger trains. After that the Alexandra Interprovincial Bridge became a pedestrian-vehicular bridge.

Apart from connecting the two cities of Canada, the bridge also serves as a roadway for vehicles.

It is the main route of the Trans Canada Trail. The west deck of the Alexandra Interprovincial Bridge offers a scenic view of the Gatineau-Ottawa skyline.Presently, the deck is being used by cyclists, pedestrians and rollerbladers.

At both the ends of the Alexandra Interprovincial Bridge there are two important museums. On the Gatineau part, lies the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the National Gallery on the Ottawa side. The United States Embassy is situated on the Ottawa side of the Alexandra Interprovincial Bridge. Parks like the Major's Hill Park, and Jacques Cartier Park lie on the ends of the bridge. The bridge also serves as an important venue for important Canadian festivals.
