Varna Geography



The city of Varna is an administrative center in the northeastern Bulgaria in Europe. Varna geography is said to be undulating with a series of plateaus. The total area of Varna is about 3 820 km2, covering only 3.4% of the nation. Varna is bordered by the Bourgas in the south, Shumen in the west, Dobrich in the north and the Black Sea in the east.

The geography of Varna craetes a picturesque scene with several ups and downs. The extensive land spreads over numerous plateaus. Varna region enjoys an advantageous geographical location, as it is situated along the Black Sea. Tourism have thrived here because of pleasant climatic conditions and many resorts have mushroomed along Zlatni Pyasatsi or the Golden Sands, St. Konstantin and Elena.
The coastline of the Black Sea contributes to the hilly relief features of Varna. The Danubian Plain includes the Frangen Plateau, the Provadiya Plateau, South Dobruja, Ludogorie and the Avren Plateau. The other physical features of Varna are the Varna—Devnya valley featuring the lakes of Varna and Beloslav, the Eastern Stara Planina and the Kamchiya river valley.

The rivers of Provadiya, Devnya, and Batova are important water sources of the city. The largest artificial lake of Varna is Tsonevo. The rocky headlands of Cape Galata and Cape St. Athanassius offer a lovely view. At the mouths of the rivers Kamchiya and Shkorpilovska, there are some spectacular cove beaches, which are one of the loved spots for the tourists. Almost 60% of the land is used for agricultural purpose. The Varna geography not only offers a breathtaking aerial view of the city, but also contributes to the continental climate.
