Varna Demography


Varna demography estimated approximately 460 001 inhabitants in 2002. The people of Varna comprises almost 5.9% of the national total. In terms of population, Varna is the 3rd largest among Bulgaria's 28 regions. The demography of Varna have always shown numerous ethnic groups residing in this city.

The average population density of Varna is around 120.4 inhabitants per km2, as estimated in 2002. The population of Varna have steadily been above the national average since the past years. In 2002, a survey showed the death rate was 12 per thousand, which was higher than the birth rate of 9.3 per thousand. The age structure of the Varna population is better than the national situation. Infant mortality is comparatively less than the national average.

The ethnic groups in Varna include Bulgarians (85.3%); Turks (8.1%); Roma (3.4%); Russians (0.3%); Armenians (0.6%) and very few Ukrainians, Jews, Greeks, Circassians, Crimean, Tatars and Vlachs. Some more immigrants have recently moved into Varna of the Chinese, African, Indian, Arab origin.

The main religion of Varna is Christianity. Almost 83% of the population is Orthodox Christians, while 9.75% are Muslims and there are some smaller groups of Protestants, Jews, Roman Catholics, Buddhists and members of recent religious movements. The Varna demography is rich in cultural diversity.
