Being one of the oldest cities in Europe, the museums in Varna are the true repository of the culture and the heritage of Ancient Varna. Founded by the Miletians in 570 BCE, Ancient Varna was a trading colony and was known as Odessos. The name given to it was of pre-Greek origin. Known for its precious artifacts and gold, ancient Varna was also the center for pre-historic settlements, especially the eneolithic necropolis.

Ionians and the Greco-Thracians. In 339 BCE, Phillip II conquered the city but could retain his power long and the city came under the possession of Alexander the Great in 335 BC.
Ancient Varna was an important Christian center, which is justified by the remains of the basilicas and the monasteries. Theophanes the Confessor was the first to propose the name 'Varna', as the city caught the limelight during the Slavic conquest of the Balkans between the 6th and the 7th century. Fresh within the ruins of the city, the reminiscences of ancient Varna prove to be an intricate part of the Varna history.
