In Sofia Zoo in the capital of the Republic of Bulgaria is one of the most visited tourist places of the city. It is a family destination in Sofia in the true sense of the term and is equally popular among the adults and the children. The Sofia Zoo was established on the 1st of May, 1888, at the grand building, which was formerly known as the Royal Palace. It is the oldest zoological garden in Bulgaria.
The main attraction of this zoo in Sofia at the time of its establishment was a Eurasian Black Vulture. A few mammals and pheasants were added to it later. When there was a lack of space in the Royal Palace, on the orders of Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria, the Sofia Zoo was moved to the former botanical garden of the city. The Sofia Zoo, Bulgaria, was later moved to its present position at the centre of Sofia in the year 1984.

The Sofia Zoo has a crowned elephant as its symbol. The zoo is spread over an area of 230,000 square metres and is the largest zoo of Bulgaria. Also known as the Capital Sofia Zoo, it is home to more than 1,100 animals. There are nearly 250 species of animals and birds in this zoo.
