Sofia Valley


Sofia Valley is located in the central-western part of Bulgaria. The capital city of Bulgaria, Sofia is located in this valley. The valley surrounds Stara Planina in the northeast, Vakarel Mountain in the southeast, low Slivnitsa Heights in the northwest and Viskyar, Lyulin, Vitosha and Lozen mountains in the southwest. There are many mineral rich springs in the valley of Sofia like Bankya, Gorna Banya and Pancharevo.

The middle part of the Sofia Valley, Bulgaria is located at an elevation of 1700 meters above sea level. The Sofia Mountain with glacial formation on the top is indeed a spectacular view. Abishira-Ahuba mountain range can also be seen from this part of the valley.
Sofia River lies on the right side of the valley. Erebia aethiops melusina butterfly are found in abundance here. The upper part of the Sofia Valley lies at an altitude of 1850 meters. In the southern part of the Sofia Valley of Bulgaria is surrounded by the mountain of Vitosha.

The climate of the Sofia Valley is influenced by foehn winds coming from south-southwestern direction. Sofia Valley is the meeting point of the trade routes that goes along Iskar and Struma Rivers and links Danube coast with the Mediterranean and the Aegean region. The flat land of the valley of Sofia is used for cultivation. An abundance of non-woody plants can be located in this part.
