Sofia Synagogue

In Sofia Synagogue is the third largest synagogue in Europe. The synagogue stands at the center of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. The synagogues of Amsterdam and Budapest are ranked second and first respectively.

The Sofia Synagogue is designed according to the Spanish Moresque style and was designed by the famous Austrian architect, Grunanger. This synagogue in Sofia appears like the Vienna synagogue destroyed by the Nazis. The synagogue was opened in the year 1909, 9th September by Tzar Ferdinand and Tzaritza Eleonora. The Sofia Synagogue also speaks of the architectural excellence of the then people.
The synagogue can accommodate around 1300 people. The central luster of the temple is the largest in Bulgaria and weighs about two tons.

The Synagogue of Sofia for the past several years has been undergoing changes. However the restoration work came to a halt due to shortage of funds. Presently the project is being financed by the private entrepreneurs and by personal donations and also by the funds provided by the states of Israel and Bulgaria. Hundreds of people, including the officials of high origin, gather at the Sofia Synagogue on the festival days.
