Sofia Religion


The Sofia Religion has conventionally been Christian as the country of Bulgaria had adopted Christianity long before. Roman Catholicism gained grounds in Sofia since the middle ages. 19th century saw the advent of Protestantism. The religion is also an integral part of Sofia culture. In Sofia Religion there has been no disagreement between Christianity and Islam.

The constitution of Bulgaria allows its nationals to practice freedom and equality of all religion. Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria is known as" Triangle of Religious Tolerance". In Sofia, the St Nedelya Church, Sofia Synagogue, and Banya Bashi Mosque are located within close proximity.

According to the census recorded in the year 2001, the religious groups in Bulgaria are:

Christianity in Bulgaria was established in the First Bulgarian Empire under Boris I in the mid of 9th century. The largest minority religion in Sofia is Islam. The religion of Islam had arrived in Bulgaria with the advent of the Ottoman Turkish invasion during the 14th and 15th century.

Roman Catholicism in Bulgaria gained grounds since the middle ages. In modern times, the constitution of Bulgaria prohibits the open observance of religion by any unregistered groups. The Bulgarian Constitution also allocates Eastern Orthodox Christianity as the customary religion of the country.
