The Monument to the Tsar Liberator was constructed in the honor of the famous Emperor of Russia, Alexander II. The monument is one of the equestrian monuments located in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. The Russian Emperor liberated the country from the clutches of the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Turkish war fought between the years 1877-1878. The structure was designed by the much famed Italian sculptor, Arnoldo Zocchi. The Monument to the Tsar Liberator is the result of a competition that was held between twelve countries, who contested with their respective designs for the structure. The Monument to the Tsar Liberator, Sofia was completed in the year 1903, on the 15th of September. The official inauguration of the Monument to the Tsar Liberator, Bulgaria took place on the 30th of August, in the year 1907. Some of the famous personalities, namely, Knyaz Ferdinand I of Bulgaria and his sons Kiril and Boris, the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia and the son of Alexander II, along with his son and wife. Other significant structures present near the Monument to the Tsar Liberator in Sofia include the Radisson SAS hotel and the National Assembly of Bulgaria.
