Sofia Medical University has earned the reputation of being the oldest higher medical educational institution of Bulgaria. This renowned medical university of Bulgaria was established in the year of 1917. The Medical University of Sofia has four departments. They are:
- Department of Pharmacy
- Department of Medicine
- Department of Dental Medicine
- Department of Public Health
King Ferdinand is the founding member of the Medical University in Sofia. The department of dentistry of this university came up in 1942. It was founded by Assistant professor G. Stiljanov, Assistant Professor Sl. Davidov and Prof. Al. Stanishev.
The Department of Medicine was separated from the Sofia University and started functioning independently as a Medical Academy with the two departments of dentistry and medicine. The department of pharmacy was established in 1951. Some of the doctors who have made their contribution in the establishment of the Sofia Medical University are St. Vatev, M. Russev and P. Orahovatz.
The Medical University at Sofia became a University from 21st of May, 1995. Since then it is counted under the Sofia Universities. The university employs excellent faculty members who are committed in shaping the students future. A combination of theoretical and practical knowledge based on scientific research is imparted to the students of the Sofia Medical University.
