The current Mayor of Sofia is Boiko Borissov. He rose to the position of mayor in November, 2005 by defeating former mayor, Stefan Sofiyanski. He has a large number of functions to perform. They are:
- Managing the executive functions of the municipality
- Maintaining social order
- Coordinating the work of specialized bodies
- Defending the people against any kind of disasters
- Executing state budget
- Executing the decisions taken by the Municipal Council
- He forms the bridge between the political parties and other organizations with the self-government both domestically and internationally
- He is also the representative of the municipality before the court
A brief profile of Boiko Borissov
Boiko Borissov was born in Bankya on 13th June, 1959. He did his graduation in fire technology and safety engineering. A security company named WON-1 Ltd. was created by him in 1991. He was later on appointed as the bodyguard of ex-Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg. Boiko Borissov was appointed Chief Secretary of Interior Ministry on 1st September, 2001.He has visited several countries like USA, Spain, France, UK and Greece for putting an end to crimes related to drugs, smuggling and human trafficking.

- A Medal for Operational Friendship and Cooperation given by the Deputy Director of the Federal Security Service, Russia
- Baton of Honor given by the Director General of the Spanish Police
- Director of Europol Mr. Jurgen Storbeck awarded him a certificate in January, 2004 for his contribution made in the field of countering false Euros
- President of the Italian Republic awarded him the Commander of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity on 13th June, 2006
- Drug Enforcement Administration under the US Department of Justice awarded him a certificate of appreciation for his contribution in countering drug related matters
